Session Description: 

This is a rare opportunity to hear from a leading expert on the most productive means of questioning children about abuse and violence. Presenter Thomas D. Lyon, JD, Ph.D, directs the Child Interviewing Lab at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. The lab interviews children about suspected sexual abuse for the LA County Dependency Courts, trains interviewers, and conducts research. Dr. Lyon will share valuable insight and techniques unique to interviewing children and adolescents. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify narrative practice rapport building techniques
  • Avoid yes-no and forced-choice questions. 
  • Formulate Asking invitations: Broad open-ended questions that maximize the amount of accurate information children can provide.

Dr. Thomas D. Lyon


Thomas D. Lyon’s goal is to identify the most productive means of questioning children about abuse and violence. He is the Judge Edward J. and Ruey L. Guirado Chair in Law and Psychology at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. He teaches Evidence and the Child Interviewing Practicum. Lyon directs the USC Child Interviewing Lab, which conducts research and forensic interviews with children who have been victims of maltreatment or who have witnessed violence. 

Lyon is past-president of the American Psychological Association’s Section on Child Maltreatment (Division 37) and a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. He has published more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals, law reviews, and books. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the United States Department of Justice, the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect, the California Endowment, and the Haynes Foundation. 

A magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, Lyon received his PhD. in developmental psychology from Stanford University. He was an attorney for the Children’s Services Division of the Los Angeles County Counsel and a research associate at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center prior to joining USC Law in 1995.

Kathy Eppright, AWI-CH is the Chairman of the firm’s Employment Law Practice Group and a member of the firm’s Civil Litigation, Hospitality and Wine & Agribusiness Practice Groups. Kathy has been practicing 25 years with a focus on employment litigation and counseling. Kathy has handled cases ranging from employment discrimination and sexual harassment to real property and business disputes. In addition to actions brought in state court, Kathy has successfully defended claims of discrimination, harassment, and wage and hour claims filed with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, the EEOC, the California Labor Commissioner and the U. S. Department of Labor. Kathy also frequently serves as an outside workplace investigator and is a Certificate Holder from the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI) and convener for the AWI Central Coast local circle.
